On 01/02/2026, Bakersfield Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 3700 block of El Alisal Street in south Bakersfield for a reported disturbance involving a man with a handgun. Officers arrived and contacted 41 year old Jerry Lynn Steele Jr. Police stated Steele had a handgun during the encounter. Officers opened fire and shot Steele. He was pronounced dead after the shooting. Bakersfield Police confirmed body-worn cameras recorded the incident.
