Event : Bystander killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/25/2026, a Georgia state trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra traveling about 90 mph in a 55 mph zone on Interstate 20 West in Fulton County. Police said the driver initially slowed before accelerating away. Troopers said White crossed multiple lanes of traffic, exited at Boulevard, then abruptly attempted to merge back onto the interstate, nearly causing a collision.
According to investigators, the trooper could not safely continue directly behind the vehicle and exited separately. Police said White lost control near a gas station off the exit area and crashed into several people standing in the parking lot. A woman who was struck died from her injuries. Three additional people were reportedly seriously injured.
Authorities charged White with multiple offenses connected to the pursuit and crash. The identity of the woman killed had not been publicly released as of initial reporting. The crash renewed public scrutiny of Georgia State Patrol pursuit policies, which have faced repeated criticism after multiple bystander deaths connected to high speed chases in recent years.<span class="apple-converted-space"

Floyd Vanzile Jr.
Age :64
Gender :Male
Race : White
Date : 05/24/2026
Location : Indian Settlement Road
City : Nashville
County : Forest
State : Wisconsin
Agency : Forest County Sheriff’s Office
Officer(s) : Trevor Anderson; Anthony Staffeld; Austin Babich
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during disturbance call
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/23/2026, Forest County emergency dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire inside a housing complex on Indian Settlement Road on the Mole Lake Reservation in the Town of Nashville. Callers reported that Floyd R. Vanzile Jr. had fired three gunshots inside the apartment building. Additional callers reported that Vanzile had moved outside in a wheelchair while carrying a rifle and was continuing to fire around the residential complex.
Crandon Police Department officers Trevor Anderson and Anthony Staffeld responded with personnel from the Forest County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conservation warden Austin Babich. Officers encountered Vanzile outside the apartment complex with the rifle. Investigators determined that Vanzile fired in the direction of occupied residences and responding law-enforcement personnel.
Anderson and Staffeld fired their department weapons at Vanzile. Their rounds did not strike him. Babich also fired at Vanzile, striking him with the fatal gunshot. Officers then approached Vanzile and secured the rifle. Emergency personnel provided medical aid, but Vanzile died at the scene. The Wisconsin Department of Justice later confirmed Vanzile’s full identity as Floyd R. Vanzile Jr. in its public investigative file.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation. DCI investigators collected physical evidence, interviewed civilian and law-enforcement witnesses, reviewed body-camera recordings and examined the officers’ firearms and other evidence from the scene. The Forest County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory assisted DCI during the investigation.
After DCI completed its investigation, the agency submitted the case to an outside prosecutor for an independent review. Dodge County District Attorney Andrea Will reviewed the investigative reports, witness statements, physical evidence and body-camera recordings. Will concluded that Vanzile was actively firing a weapon with disregard for the people living in the housing complex and that Babich fired to protect officers and members of the public from an immediate threat.
Will determined that Babich’s use of deadly force was objectively reasonable and legally justified. She also determined that Anderson and Staffeld acted in lawful self-defense when they fired their weapons. The Dodge County District Attorney’s Office declined to file criminal charges against Babich, Anderson or Staffeld. The Wisconsin Department of Justice subsequently released the DCI investigative records associated with Vanzile’s death.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 05/23/2026 at approximately 6:16 p.m., a California Highway Patrol officer assigned to the Bakersfield Area Office observed a white 2018 Land Rover commit a traffic violation near the intersection of Scodie Avenue and Dunwood Street in the Kern Valley area. The officer attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, but the driver, later identified as Ashot Geboyan, continued driving away while the CHP officer pursued.
The pursuit continued southbound on Sierra Way toward Lake Isabella. Investigators reported that Geboyan drove at a high rate of speed as he approached a curve near Stine Cove. The SUV became completely submerged, and Geboyan did not exit the vehicle.
CHP officers, Kern County firefighters, and search-and-rescue personnel responded immediately and began recovery operations. Divers searched the lake through the evening. At approximately 2:51 a.m. on 05/24/2026, recovery crews located the submerged Land Rover and removed it from the lake. Geboyan, who was the sole occupant, was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead.

Hector Martinez
Age :49
Gender :Male
Race : Latino/a/e
Date : 05/21/2026
Location : 1100 block of West Ramsey Street near 8th Street
City : Banning
County : Riverside
State : California
Agency : Banning Police Department
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Vehicle
Event : Wheelchair user killed by police vehicle
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
NARRATIVE:
On 05/21/2026, 49-year-old Hector Martinez was killed after an on-duty Banning Police Department officer driving a patrol vehicle struck him while Martinez was crossing West Ramsey Street in a wheelchair in Banning, California.
.
At approximately 10:45 p.m., the Banning police officer was driving westbound in the 1100 block of West Ramsey Street near 8th Street. Martinez was traveling south across the westbound lanes of Ramsey Street in his wheelchair when the patrol vehicle struck him.
.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the impact threw Martinez into the eastbound side of Ramsey Street, where he came to rest in the No. 2 traffic lane.
.
The Banning police officer stopped after the collision and provided aid. American Medical Response and Banning Fire Department personnel responded, and Martinez was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
.
The California Highway Patrol investigated the fatal collision. Initial reporting did not disclose why the Banning officer was driving on Ramsey Street, whether the officer was responding to a call, whether emergency lights or siren were activated, or the speed of the patrol vehicle before it struck Martinez.
.
Martinez was not identified in the initial news coverage. Subsequent Banning-area death and funeral records list 49-year-old Hector Martinez as having died on 05/21/2026, the exact date of the police collision. Wiefels Mortuary & Cremation Services in Banning handled his funeral arrangements. The obituary information gives his date of birth as 01/02/1977. The Banning obituary index independently records Hector Martinez, age 49, as dying on May 21.
.
Local Facebook material surrounding reporting of the fatal West Ramsey Street police collision also produced a memorial/fundraising reference for Hector Martinez, providing additional circumstantial evidence connecting Martinez to the man killed in the collision. Taken together with his exact date of death, age, Banning funeral arrangements and local memorial activity, I am identifying the victim as Hector Martinez for this database entry. The identification should still be updated if Riverside County authorities subsequently publish a conflicting identification.
.
OFFICER BACKGROUND:
The Banning Police Department has not publicly identified the officer driving the patrol vehicle that struck and killed Martinez. No information located thus far establishes whether the officer was disciplined, cited or criminally charged in connection with the collision.

On 05/18/2026, Galveston police Officer Joshua Nino de Guzman initiated a traffic stop near Avenue O and 55th Street. Police said de Guzman asked Randy Martin, 47, to exit the vehicle and a physical struggle followed. Martin’s mother, Paula Martin, publicly called for truth and transparency and described him as someone who helped with clothing drives, toy drives and community outreach.
