On 01/07/2026, deputies with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from the Nelson County Humane Society that a man had threatened staff with a firearm. On 01/01/2026, Alaska State Troopers responded to a residence on Gradelle Avenue in Fairbanks after receiving reports that 24 year old William Rexford was damaging property inside a family home and making threats of self-harm. Troopers contacted Rexford inside the residence. During the encounter, Rexford went into a kitchen area and obtained a knife. Troopers discharged their firearms and shot Rexford. He was pronounced dead at the residence. Another man inside the home was also struck by trooper gunfire and transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting, and the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions will evaluate the findings upon completion of the investigation.
