On 05/21/2026, 49-year-old Hector Martinez was killed after an on-duty Banning Police Department officer driving a patrol vehicle struck him while Martinez was crossing West Ramsey Street in a wheelchair in Banning, California.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., the Banning police officer was driving westbound in the 1100 block of West Ramsey Street near 8th Street. Martinez was traveling south across the westbound lanes of Ramsey Street in his wheelchair when the patrol vehicle struck him.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the impact threw Martinez into the eastbound side of Ramsey Street, where he came to rest in the No. 2 traffic lane.
