On 01/04/2026, Illinois State Police troopers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle in East St. Louis, Illinois. During the attempted stop on South State Street, the driver, identified as 40-year-old Rachel E. Tarrence, backed the vehicle into a police squad car and then drove toward a trooper. A trooper discharged his firearm, striking Tarrence. She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No troopers were injured in the incident.
