On 01/08/2026 at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers with the New York Police Department responded to multiple reports of a violent man inside New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Park Slope. The man, identified as 62-year-old Michael Lynch, was a former NYPD officer who resigned in the 1990s, according to police officials.
Hospital staff and security told officers that Lynch had repeatedly cut himself and was armed with a jagged piece of a broken toilet seat that he had fashioned into a sharp object. He had also threatened to harm others and had barricaded himself inside a hospital room with an elderly patient and a hospital security worker.
Officers issued numerous verbal commands for Lynch to drop the improvised weapon and attempted to subdue him using a conducted energy device, which was not effective. Police then discharged their firearms when Lynch advanced toward officers while still holding the broken toilet seat, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
