On 01/07/2026 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Hinsdale Police responded to 53 Off South Street after the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center alerted authorities that Biagio Kauvil, 27, had contacted the FBI and made statements indicating paranoia and distress, including claims that police were monitoring his phone. Officers conducted a welfare check and spoke with Kauvil’s father outside the home. Kauvil had locked himself inside an upstairs bedroom and refused repeated commands to exit.
Chief Sean S. Flynn and Sgt. Derek Smith remained at the residence for several hours attempting to communicate with Kauvil. During the standoff, Kauvil told officers to kill him and made statements indicating he had a firearm. At approximately 11:30 a.m., officers forced entry into the locked bedroom. According to Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue, Kauvil fired a handgun inside the room, striking Chief Flynn and Sgt. Smith. Officers deployed a Taser twice. Officers then opened fire, striking Kauvil multiple times.
Emergency personnel transported Kauvil to Berkshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Chief Flynn and Sgt. Smith were also transported and treated for gunshot wounds; both survived. The Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s office are conducting the investigation. Authorities recovered a firearm from the bedroom.
