On 01/08/2026, a deputy with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Daniel Olson while he was operating an off-road vehicle on Lowery Road in Coweta County, Georgia. Olson did not stop, and deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit. Olson drove to a residence and entered the home, where deputies established a perimeter and issued commands for him to come outside. Olson later exited the residence holding a handgun and left the area in a vehicle, traveling toward the Meadowbrook Lane area. Deputies continued pursuing him.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Olson exited his vehicle near Meadowbrook Lane while holding the handgun and approached a deputy. The GBI stated that Olson fired at the deputy. The deputy fired his weapon, striking Olson. Deputies secured the area and requested medical assistance. Emergency personnel transported Olson to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. The deputy involved has not been publicly identified.

On 01/08/2026 just before 7:30 p.m., Maui Police Department officers responded to a report of a terroristic threatening incident involving a man reported to have a gun in an open field off Maui Lani Parkway near Kehalani Ace Hardware in Kahului. Police said officers located Kristopher Austin, 40, and gave commands that he did not follow. Police said Austin fired toward officers, and officers opened fire, striking him. Police said Austin died from his injuries.
In the days after the shooting, Maui Police Department leadership held a news conference and released body worn camera footage and a still image that police said showed a handgun on the ground near Austin. Reporting described the footage as showing Austin bringing a handgun up while officers were nearby, followed by gunfire.
Hawaii News Now reported that Austin’s partner identified him publicly, shared a photo, and described him as someone she had been with for nine years who had been struggling with serious personal pain.
