On 01/08/2026, in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, officers responded after being flagged down by people involved in a traffic crash at Bedford Street and Sixth Avenue following an apparent road rage encounter. When police approached a white BMW that was stopped in traffic, the 37-year-old driver exited the vehicle and pointed an object at them. Police opened fire and struck him. Investigators later determined the weapon was an imitation firearm. The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The NYPD Force Investigation Division is reviewing the shooting.
