On 01/07/2026, Nelson County sheriff’s deputies responded after an employee at the Nelson County Humane Society reported a man had become disorderly and threatened staff with a firearm. Authorities identified the man as 80-year-old Norman Perkins of New Haven, Kentucky. After Perkins left the scene in a vehicle, officers attempted a traffic stop on Bloomfield Road. Perkins initially refused to stop, and once he pulled into the parking lot of a local business, deputies attempted to make contact. Kentucky State Police reported that Perkins raised and pointed a firearm at officers during the encounter. Two deputies then discharged their service weapons, striking Perkins. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured, and the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting.
