OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/07/2026, deputies with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from the Nelson County Humane Society that a man had threatened staff with a firearm. Authorities identified the man as 80-year-old Norman Perkins of New Haven, Kentucky. After leaving the humane society property in a vehicle, deputies attempted to stop Perkins on Bloomfield Road.
Perkins did not immediately stop. Deputies continued following him until he pulled into the parking lot of the Speedy Mart on Bloomfield Road. Deputies exited their vehicles and attempted to make contact. According to Kentucky State Police, Perkins raised and pointed a firearm toward deputies during the encounter. Two deputies opened fire, striking Perkins. He died at the location.
Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team responded and assumed the investigation. Authorities have not publicly released the names of the deputies who fired.
