On 01/07/2026, Navajo Police Department officers responded to reports of a possible domestic kidnapping in the To’Hajiilee area west of Albuquerque. Authorities issued a shelter in place order affecting To’Hajiilee Community School, government offices, and nearby residents while officers searched for a woman believed to be in danger.
During the response, officers encountered a 38-year-old Native American man identified by authorities as connected to the reported kidnapping. According to Navajo Police statements released through local media, officers engaged the man near Route 66 and Tribal Road 707. Police opened fire during the encounter, striking him. He died at the location.
Law enforcement later confirmed the woman involved in the initial report was located safely. The shelter in place order was lifted after the shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to assist in the investigation due to the location on tribal land. Authorities have not publicly released the name of the man or the officers involved.
