On 01/08/2026, a 40-year-old man was killed by Maui police officers following an armed encounter in an open field off Maui Lani Parkway near Kehalani Ace Hardware in Kahului, Hawaii. The Maui Police Department responded to a report of a terroristic threat involving an armed individual in the area. Upon arrival, officers located the man, who reportedly refused to comply with commands and opened fire at officers. Law enforcement returned fire, striking him. He was pronounced dead from his injuries. No other injuries were reported.
