On 01/10/2026, Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to a reported commercial burglary in the area of Cochiti SE near a mobile home park in southeast Albuquerque. Officers located a vehicle connected to the report and pursued individuals who fled on foot. Police identified one of the men as James Litteral, 40. Officers attempted to deploy a Taser during the foot pursuit. Police stated Litteral had a firearm during the encounter but did not discharge it. At least one officer then fired and struck Litteral. He died from gunshot injuries at the location. Another individual was taken into custody in connection with the burglary. The Multi-Agency Task Force is investigating the shooting.
