On 01/11/2026 at approximately 1:49 a.m., a Greenville Police Department officer was shot while seated in a patrol vehicle at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center. Authorities identified the shooter as David William Lane, 42, of Greenville. The officer was struck multiple times and transported to a hospital for treatment. Law enforcement initiated a pursuit of Lane after the shooting. Officers located him near Independence Boulevard and Ponders Ray Lane. During the encounter, officers opened fire and struck Lane. He died from gunshot injuries. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. Authorities have not released the names of the officers who fired.
