OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/11/2026, Danville Police Department officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a man was harming himself with a knife at Centre Estates Apartments on Centre Estates Drive. Officers made contact at the apartment and requested the individual come outside. Police stated Cody Downey, 29, exited the residence holding a knife. Authorities reported Downey moved toward officers and physical contact occurred, resulting in one officer being knocked to the ground. An officer then discharged a firearm and struck Downey. Officers transported him to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he died from gunshot injuries.
The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting. The officer who fired was placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy. Downey’s family stated he was deaf, used hearing aids, and had difficulty hearing verbal commands. Family members expressed concern that communication barriers may have affected the encounter and have requested transparency in the investigation. Authorities have not publicly stated whether body-worn camera footage will be released
