On the evening of January 11, 2026, Danville Police responded to a 911 call reporting that a man was harming himself with a knife at Center Estates Apartments in Danville, Kentucky. Upon arrival, officers attempted to contact the individual inside the residence. According to police, the man, later identified as 29-year-old Cody Downey, exited the apartment holding a knife, moved toward officers, and knocked one officer to the ground. An officer then opened fire, striking Downey. He was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting. Downey’s family states that he was deaf and unable to hear officers’ commands, and that there was no sign language interpreter present. His sister says he wore hearing aids but still struggled to hear. The family has expressed concern that communication barriers may have contributed to the outcome and has requested transparency in the investigation.
