On 06/13/2026, a Johnston County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop 21-year-old John Cutler Murray for speeding and running a red light on Clayton Boulevard in Clayton. Murray did not stop and continued driving, leading deputies on a brief pursuit onto Powhatan Road. According to investigators, Murray lost control while approaching the intersection of Powhatan Road and Harrison Road, failed to negotiate a curve, crossed the centerline, and left the roadway. He was thrown from the motorcycle and struck a telephone box and a small tree in the yard of a residence. The pursuing deputy came upon the crash moments later and began rendering aid until emergency personnel arrived. Murray was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated that Murray was also involved in a property-damage hit-and-run during the pursuit. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Speed and alcohol are believed to have been contributing factors.
