On January 10, 2026, shortly before 6 p.m., officers with the Gastonia Police Department were conducting a routine compliance check inside Jacob’s Food Mart on Gaston Avenue when Derrick Manigault entered the store. According to the department, Manigault was in an agitated state and was “waiving a gun in his hand making threatening movements” when officers opened fire, striking him. Manigault was transported to a hospital and later died from his injuries. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting. Two officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, and the Gastonia Police Department is also conducting an internal inquiry.
