On 01/01/2026, Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of West 37th Street in the San Pedro neighborhood regarding a reported domestic disturbance and restraining order violation. Officers located 39-year-old Lawrence Gonzales at the residence and attempted to detain him. During the encounter, Gonzales had a knife. Officers discharged their firearms and shot Gonzales. He was pronounced dead after the shooting. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident.
