OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/06/2026, deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a white van in Ypsilanti Township after 911 callers reported a vehicle driving without headlights or license plates and indicated it may have been involved in an assault. Deputies initiated a pursuit when the van failed to stop. The pursuit lasted several minutes and included erratic driving, with the van traveling at high speeds and at times against traffic.
The pursuit ended when the van collided with a sheriff’s office vehicle near Prospect Road and Towner Street and rolled onto its side. Deputies approached the overturned vehicle and then discharged their service weapons, striking the driver, who died at the scene. Initial radio traffic during the incident included deputies reporting that the driver had a shotgun, but in a later review by the sheriff’s office and Michigan State Police, no firearm was found in or around the van. Michigan State Police continues its criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting, and the deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.
