OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 01/06/2026, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies attempted to stop a white van in Ypsilanti Township after 911 callers reported the vehicle driving erratically and one caller said the driver threatened his wife with what he believed was a handgun. A vehicle pursuit ensued, during which the van crashed after deputies used a PIT maneuver. Deputies approached the overturned van and multiple deputies fired their weapons, killing the 35 year old male occupant. Released dashcam footage and follow-up statements confirmed that no firearm was found in the vehicle, despite deputies initially believing the man was armed. Four deputies involved were placed on administrative leave and the Michigan State Police is investigating the shooting.
