OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/14/2026, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at Imeca Lumber & Hardware on East University Avenue. Police determined that Justin Dewayne Long, 31, shot and killed 23-year-old Eduardo Pardo Rodriguez inside the business. Long left the area in a vehicle. Officers located him near East University Avenue and Waldo Road and attempted to stop him. Police said Long fired at officers during the encounter, striking two officers. Officers opened fire, striking Long. Officers transported him to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. Authorities have not publicly released the names of the officers involved. Law enforcement has not yet detailed the status of body-worn camera footage in initial reporting.
