OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/15/2026 just after noon, deputies from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office made contact with a suspect at the Culver’s on State Road 200 in Yulee who was wanted in connection with an alleged stolen vehicle from Southwest Florida. The suspect was placed in the rear of a patrol vehicle after being handcuffed. While in custody, the suspect had a concealed firearm that discharged, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the backseat of the patrol car. Nassau County Fire Rescue responded and rendered aid, but the suspect died from their injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called to conduct an independent investigation into the in-custody death, and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal review to determine if any policy violations occurred. The identity, age, gender, and race of the individual have not been publicly released. The deputy involved was not injured during the incident.
