On 01/16/2026, Adams County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported “weapons disturbance” early Friday morning at the Caraway Apartments in northern Denver. Deputies initially encountered people who fled on foot. After continuing to search the area, officers encountered a group matching the earlier description and a foot chase ensued. While searching near the apartment building, an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times in a stairwell. The deputy has been reported in stable but serious condition in intensive care. A man who also suffered gunshot wounds during the incident was transported to the hospital and later died. Authorities have not yet released details about the role of the man who died or whether he was shot by deputies, and the investigation is ongoing with assistance from the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
