On 01/13/2026, Longwood Police Department officers responded to a mental health call at the Circle K convenience store on State Road 434 after a store clerk reported a man inside who appeared suicidal. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man did not comply and kept his hands concealed. At one point he moved his hand from his waistband in a manner officers found threatening, and an officer fired, striking him multiple times. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died from complications following surgery. Law enforcement later confirmed that no weapon was found and the man had been unarmed.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
