On 01/07/2026, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop Joshua Gianni Haire for speeding on State Road 79 in Washington County near Vernon. Authorities reported the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. Haire did not stop. Troopers escalated a pursuit that reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.
Troopers performed a PIT maneuver on State Road 79 near Millers Ferry Road, which brought the vehicle to a stop. Haire exited the vehicle and ran into a wooded area adjacent to the roadway. According to Florida Highway Patrol, Haire had a handgun. During the encounter in the wooded area, a trooper opened fire, striking Haire. Emergency personnel responded, but Haire died from his injuries.
Reporting identified Haire as a resident of Slocomb, Alabama. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The name of the trooper who fired has not been publicly released.
