OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On early morning 01/18/2026, Snellville Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop when the driver of a Hyundai Elantra fled, prompting a high-speed pursuit. The vehicle continued north on Scenic Highway toward Lawrenceville before the driver lost control, struck a median barrier, then a mailbox and utility pole, and flipped several times. 19-year-old passenger Naveah McGowan was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries. McGowan’s family described her as an aspiring hair stylist saving for her first car and apartment and remembered her as joyful and loving; relatives said she had initially resisted going out that night before agreeing to accompany a friend. During the pursuit, passengers repeatedly asked the driver to stop. Police have arrested the driver and are pursuing charges. The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting in the investigation.
