OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On January 21, 2026, San Jose Police Department patrol officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking at a San Jose car dealership. A suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Mohamed Husien of Davis, stole a vehicle and fled, leading officers into a multi-jurisdiction pursuit that took them into Hollister and San Benito County before returning to San Jose. During the pursuit, the suspect engaged in multiple confrontations with law enforcement and was armed with a handgun. At approximately 3:53 PM near Julian Street and Highway 87, Husien collided with another vehicle and exited his car, firing rounds and fracturing the skull of an SJPD sergeant. Officers returned fire; Husien was struck, and a responding patrol vehicle also struck him. He was pronounced dead at the location. An SJPD sergeant injured in the incident was hospitalized in stable but critical condition and is expected to survive. The incident is under investigation by the San Jose Police Department’s Homicide Unit, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, SJPD Internal Affairs, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor. Body-worn cameras were activated during the encounter.
