OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On January 21, 2026 at about 3:30 a.m., South Bend Police Department attempted to stop a stolen GMC Sierra near South and Fellows Streets. The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Tyler Straub of Mishawaka, did not stop and led officers on a short pursuit. According to police, Straub ran a red light at the intersection of Sample Street and Michigan Street and struck a Chevrolet Cruze, driven by 58-year-old Pedro Rosales of South Bend. Rosales was seriously injured and later died at a hospital. Straub and his passenger, 24-year-old Janet Binion, were taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries and later arrested; Rosales’ name was publicly released once family was notified. No South Bend police vehicle was reported to have struck Rosales; the collision occurred when the fleeing suspect’s vehicle ran a red light. The crash remains under investigation by the St. Joseph County FACT and the South Bend Police Department’s Pursuit Review Committee.
