OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/21/2026, South Bend Police attempted to stop a reportedly stolen GMC Sierra near South Street and Fellows Street around 3:30 a.m. The driver did not stop and police escalated a chase. Less than a minute after an officer activated emergency lights, the pursued pickup entered the intersection of Michigan Street and Sample Street against a red light and struck an eastbound Chevrolet Cruze. The driver of the Cruze, an adult man from South Bend, was critically injured and later died at a hospital. Police said the man who died was the driver of the struck vehicle and was not reported to have been involved in the reported vehicle theft or the chase. The driver of the pursued pickup and a passenger were injured and taken to a hospital. Police said they were withholding the deceased man’s name pending family notification. The department said its pursuit review process is reviewing the chase and crash.
