OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/21/2026 at approximately 4:15 p.m., the Lacey Police Department and Thurston County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire and a man armed with a firearm barricaded inside a unit of the College Pointe Apartment complex on College Street Southeast in Lacey, Washington. Officers established a perimeter and evacuated nearby residents. Law enforcement activated the SWAT team and the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations (OII) took operational lead for the lethal force response. Police heard gunfire from within the apartment, and at one point the armed man exited the unit and pointed a firearm in the direction of officers. An officer fired multiple rounds, striking the man. Officers provided emergency aid until medics arrived. The man, identified by his family as 30-year-old Kaleb Lewis, was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The OII is conducting a full investigation into the use of force in accordance with state protocol, and the Thurston County Coroner’s Office responded to the incident. The name of the involved officer and additional investigation results were released by the OII.
