OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/21/2026 at about 8:20 p.m., Yuma Police Department officers on patrol attempted to detain the driver of a vehicle leaving a residence where law enforcement had been conducting surveillance for suspected drug activity. Officers initially attempted a traffic stop; the driver did not stop and continued driving. Police located the vehicle near Colorado Street and 9th/10th Avenues, where it entered a dead-end alley. According to a preliminary body-worn camera review released by YPD, the driver appeared to use the vehicle in a manner that endangered officers, pinning one against a fence and driving toward another. Two officers discharged their firearms, striking 58-year-old Sergio Mencia Ramos. Officers immediately rendered aid, but Ramos was pronounced dead at the location. A passenger in the vehicle, a 42-year-old male, was not injured. No members of the public were reported injured. The Yuma Regional Critical Incident Response Team has been activated to conduct an independent investigation. Officers involved were placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
