OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/22/2026 at approximately 12:20 p.m., deputies from the Posey County Sheriff’s Department were searching for a man with two active felony warrants who was riding as a passenger in a tractor-trailer along State Road 69 near Copperline Road in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the semi cooperated and exited the truck, but the passenger, identified by Indiana State Police as 40-year-old Blake Fleming, exited the semi while holding a firearm to his own head. During the encounter, both deputies discharged their firearms, striking Fleming. Fleming was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured. Both deputies were wearing body-worn cameras at the time of the shooting. The Indiana State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting under state protocol.
