On 01/22/2026, Posey County sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop involving a tractor trailer at Copperline Road and State Road 69 in Mount Vernon. The stop was initiated after deputies were notified to locate a male passenger reported to have outstanding felony warrants. During the stop, the passenger exited the vehicle and was holding a firearm to his own head. Deputies opened fire. The man died at the scene. Indiana State Police are conducting an independent investigation.
