OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On January 21, 2026, deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were in the 1900 block of Young Road in Lithonia to serve an eviction order when 49-year-old Jared Toombs opened the door with a gun visible and then closed it, prompting officers to surround the home. Deputies and SWAT negotiators attempted to get Toombs to surrender peacefully. After a nearly 12-hour standoff that included the use of tear gas and negotiation efforts, officers attempted to enter the residence. Toombs fired at law enforcement, and officers returned fire, striking him. Toombs was transported to a hospital and later died from his injuries. No officers were reported injured in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation at the request of the DeKalb County Police Department.
