OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/21/2026, DeKalb County police responded to a call involving an armed man at a residence in the 1900 block of Young Road in Lithonia. The encounter escalated into a prolonged standoff that continued into the early morning hours of January 22. Police deployed SWAT units to the scene. During the standoff, officers discharged their weapons, striking Jared Toombs, 49. He was pronounced dead at the scene. One firearm was recovered. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
