On January 21, 2026, Illinois State Police troopers pursued a vehicle that had fled from a traffic stop in Tazewell County initiated by Washington Police Department officers for a criminal sexual assault warrant. Troopers deployed tire deflation devices on Interstate 55 southbound near the Sangamon Avenue exit in Springfield, causing the vehicle to become disabled. When officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver had suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual was transported to a local hospital and later died from the self-inflicted injury.
