On 01/22/2026, Carrollton Police Department officers responded to a complaint at an LA Fitness about a man reported to be taking unwanted photos of a woman, then went to William Michael Burns’ home to issue a criminal trespass warning and follow up on the complaint. Police said Burns later came outside holding a handgun and officers ordered him to put it down. Police said the situation escalated and officers opened fire, killing him. A family member told media Burns was completely deaf, and said that detail was not reflected in the initial police account.
