OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 01/23/2026 at approximately 4:30 a.m., officers from the Hardeeville Police Department responded to a call for service at the Super 8 Motel on Whyte Hardee Boulevard regarding a person attempting to enter parked vehicles. While investigating the call, officers encountered a man matching the description provided in the motel parking lot near the Shell gas station adjacent to the motel. Officers confronted the man as part of the active law enforcement response. During the encounter, an altercation occurred and gunfire was exchanged. The man, identified by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office as 19-year-old Jayden Jerome Holloway-Caldwell of Pawleys Island, sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries. A Hardeeville Police Department officer was also struck and transported to a hospital and is reported to be recovering. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
