On 01/22/2026, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a wrong-way crash on northbound Interstate 19 near kilometer marker 11 in Nogales after U.S. Border Patrol agents reported a vehicle fleeing from them. Authorities stated that the fleeing vehicle entered the northbound lanes traveling the wrong direction and collided head-on with another vehicle. Two occupants inside the fleeing vehicle died from injuries sustained in the collision. A third occupant in the fleeing vehicle was seriously injured. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash also sustained serious injuries. After the crash, the driver of the fleeing vehicle exited and attempted to run but was taken into custody by law enforcement. Authorities identified the driver as Adolfo Hernandez Salazar. He was transported for medical evaluation and later booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on multiple felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Interstate 19 northbound remained closed for several hours while investigators processed the crash scene.
