On 01/22/2026, Savannah Police Department officers responded to 911 calls in Savannah, Georgia, regarding a man with a firearm, including reports of the individual shoplifting while carrying the weapon. Officers located Mark Dennis Whibbey Jr. and issued repeated commands for him to drop the firearm. Whibbey did not comply and continued walking toward civilians; an attempt to deploy a taser was unsuccessful. When Whibbey reached toward an object in his waistband, five officers fired at him, striking him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an active investigation.
