OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY : On 01/24/2026, an Edgewater Police Department officer was patrolling near West 24th Avenue and Pierce Street when they observed a GMC Yukon and followed it, and the SUV soon traveled into the city of Wheat Ridge. After the vehicle crashed into another car and subsequently into a residential garage, a male passenger from the Yukon, later identified as 48-year-old Barry Michael Sullivan, exited and allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot at the officer. The officer fired at Sullivan, striking him. Sullivan was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition where he later died of his injuries. The First Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the incident.
