OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 01/24/2026 at approximately 10:30 a.m., an Edgewater Police Department officer observed a GMC Yukon in the area of West 24th Avenue and Pierce Street and followed the vehicle as it traveled into the city of Wheat Ridge. The Yukon was driven by a 36-year-old woman, Amber Michelle O’Neal, with Barry Michael Sullivan, 48, as a passenger. The vehicle was not immediately stopped by patrol but continued driving and later struck a Honda Pilot at West 32nd Avenue and Pierce Street before crashing into the garage of a residence. Officers arrived and began checking on the occupants of the vehicles involved. Sullivan exited the crashed SUV and produced a firearm. An Edgewater Police officer engaged Sullivan with gunfire after Sullivan fired at the officer. Sullivan was struck by gunfire. Medics transported him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No officers were injured. The driver of the Yukon was treated for injuries at a hospital and then taken into custody on outstanding warrants, including charges related to vehicular eluding and other offenses. Investigators from the Wheat Ridge Police Department and the critical incident response team for Colorado’s First Judicial District are handling the review of the shooting.
