Event : Bicyclist bystander killed by police chase crash

On 01/27/2026 at approximately 12:29 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for criminal speeding on eastbound Interstate 10 near milepost 252 in Tucson. The driver refused to yield and a pursuit commenced. The suspect’s vehicle exited the freeway at Speedway Boulevard, then struck a bicyclist and a pedestrian; the bicyclist was pronounced dead and the pedestrian was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Following the crash, the suspect reportedly fired rounds toward the pursuing trooper, who then returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a trooper sustained minor injuries.
