On 01/28/2026, Santa Ana police attempted to stop a vehicle near Santa Ana Boulevard and French Street after 10:30 p.m. The driver failed to yield and continued driving to a parking structure at 450 East Fourth Street. The driver exited the vehicle and dropped a handgun. The driver then moved back toward the handgun after exiting the vehicle, despite commands not to reach for it. An officer discharged a duty weapon, striking the driver in the upper torso. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Victor Lopez of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded Walther 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene. A woman believed to be Lopez’s girlfriend and a toddler were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. The incident is under investigation by Santa Ana police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
