OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/10/2026, Jacksonville Sheriff’s officers located Michael Wayne Jones driving a reported stolen vehicle and followed him to Kaleel Road where he exited and ran through residential yards while officers chased him on foot. Officers deployed a Taser during the pursuit and continued pursuit across fences and properties. During the confrontation, Jones displayed a handgun and officers opened fire, killing him at the scene. Authorities recovered multiple firearms and identified Jones as a Virginia resident with prior felony convictions. The State Attorney’s Office opened a review of the shooting and placed involved officers on leave pending investigation.
