On 02/14/2026, Mattoon Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at a business. Officers located the man in a vehicle in a nearby parking lot. As officers approached and gave commands, the man shot himself inside the vehicle. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released his name or age. Illinois State Police are conducting the investigation.
