OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/12/2026, St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers responded to a disturbance in the 430 block of South 15th Street and encountered 29-year-old Mark Smith, who was yelling and acting erratically. Officers determined he needed medical evaluation but were told no ambulances were available. Officers placed Smith in a police transport van and drove him to a hospital. During the transport, Smith struck his head against the metal partition inside the van. When officers arrived at the hospital, medical staff found Smith unconscious and critically injured which apparently happened during police transport. He remained hospitalized and died on 02/14/2026. Police opened a death investigation into the circumstances of the transport.
