On 02/14/2026, Wood County Sheriff’s deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to serve six felony warrants on Cody Joe Henderson, 45, of Gun Barrel City, at a residence near FM 515 and FM 2966 north of Quitman. Henderson opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, striking a Wood County deputy and a Texas DPS trooper. Both officers were hospitalized and later reported to be in stable condition. Law enforcement established a perimeter and initiated a standoff that lasted into the next morning. Multiple SWAT teams used tear gas and attempted negotiations. Around 4 a.m. Sunday, tactical teams breached the home; Henderson continued to fire at officers, who returned fire. Henderson was wounded in the exchange and was pronounced dead at a Quitman hospital.
