On 02/19/2026, Gwinnett County police responded to the 600 block of Oaktree Park Court in Lawrenceville for a welfare check involving a man reported to be in mental distress inside a residence. Officers attempted to make contact and remained outside while communicating with him for an extended period. During the encounter, police state Nawras Mahmud came outside holding a knife, and officers immediately opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead after the shooting.
