OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/20/2026, Hutchinson Police responded to a shooting in the 800 block of West 4th Avenue in Reno County and found 37-year-old Lacy D. Nelson with multiple gunshot wounds. She later died at a hospital. Police identified Curtis E. Richardson, 49, in connection with the shooting and issued a statewide alert. The following morning, Pratt County Sheriff’s deputies located a vehicle linked to Richardson traveling on K-61 Highway. A deputy attempted a traffic stop. Richardson did not stop. Police escalated a vehicle pursuit. The vehicle left the roadway and became stuck in a field near NE 30th Avenue and NE 20th Street. Law enforcement surrounded the vehicle and deployed a Special Response Team. Officers gave commands and used less-lethal measures while attempting to take Richardson into custody. Richardson remained inside the vehicle and shot himself during the standoff. EMS transported him to a hospital, where he died.
